So, last week we had an auction at school. It was supposed to show us the important values of capitalism ex. us the buyers and the proctor the seller, which is how life in America usually works (people buying and people selling stuff to earn money). I think that the auction was sort of a good idea, the things were limited and honestly to me the items were not worth the labor. My experience was not all it could have been since my credit process was messed up on an account of bad computer reception.
I think that the E-bay simulation was also a bit of an overkill, because i think the auction was good enough and just about the same thing. Even though I wasn't given the credits i was supposed to receive, i got the gist of the simulation. I think it would have been better if there were a lot more things to bid for and if there were more things that the majority of the bidders were interested in.
I think it also would have been netter if we had a better more generous source of money or a longer amount of time to gather the money. For example Like in the real world if you bet or want or buy something that you wanted you usually are able to earn money for a while and you wont buy anything unless you are sure you can pay for it. Whereas in the auction we only had a limited time to earn our "money" so if we wanted more time we didn't have it. I think it would have been better if we had a longer time to experience the class auction. As fir the E-bay assignment, I was not able to do it. My mother which is my source of money since i don't have a job, did not agree or take well to the idea of buying something for an assignment. It was made clear that you could bid on something small in order to conserve money but there was also the large possibility that someone else would bid against you and in the end the price would have gone up greatly. My mother didn't like that possibility. Honestly I think that the auction in class was enough and E-bay would have been another excuse to spend money.

Big Paper--start "mesh of ideas"

I think this shows American's at their worst, the facts show : a mob of angry people killed a man to save a couple bucks on some clothes and electronics. When you put it like that of course it sounds horrible and the article managed to successfully describe Americans as "savages". And to a point the article makes the reader believe that we as American's are savages who only care about making money and saving money. But the author of the article also managed to not get any quotes from people who were shopping. The article puts down anyone who wanted to save money for that day. I agree that the people didn't have to be that extreme but the words the author used did sound a bit extreme. Maybe it would have been a little bit more convincing if there were alternative view points.
Above: is a previous post about an incident that happened the morning of Black Friday. It involves my thoughts about an article that someone wrote describing how crazy American's get just to say a few bucks on something, this proves that they would even go as far as kill a man.
I am focusing on how an inanimate object, how little pieces of green paper with DEAD people on it can essentially run an entire society. I want to focus on the history of money and how it came to be the most important thing to many Americans. I would also like to connect the value of money, the greed that people develop for it and how far people are willing to go to get money. Lastly I will connect money to AWOL.

Comments on Sandy's Part D
I like the way you elaborated on your favorite question. You mention what you believe the main aspects of AWOL are. But i noticed that you left out one major aspect, MONEY until further in the question. I liked also how you cited the amendments you referred to. Do you think that money trumps education? Also I'm not sure i agree that congress is closest to the people. I like your thoughts on it, but i can't help but to think that nothing in the government is close to the people. Do you honestly think that people have any say in the government? and if they wanted to they might even be able to make some sort or change in the constitution?. When i talked to you, we spoke about amending the constitution. I said that i would involve all races and genders and anything else in the constitution and not just throw them in the amendments. What caught my attention was when you said that "values were different then and what they included in the constitution was what they believed in at the time. and when the values changed, there were changes made to the document". I agree with that, because i can see how if at a certain point in time you believe in one thing, then values change, you add it to what you believe in. Thus the amendments. What do you think about the time gap between the 12th and 13th amendment? I also noticed that you believe that the constitution connects to daily life, do you think people live more by the book or do you think they do what they want?

Part D
Part D Question 1-
I for one wouldn’t want that power. But since this is homework I have no choice but to answer it. I would define the word “citizen” more clearly and I would make sure that equal rights for all races and both genders were included clearly and understandable in both the bill of rights and the constitution. I would also be very careful to not include laws and amendments that may contradict each other or other laws that other businesses may have i.e. MTA searching. I would also try and make the laws and amendments reasonable gaps from each other unlike the gap between voting rights (12th amendment) and abolishing slavery (13th amendment). Also I would make a law or amendment giving the citizens more power to have a say and input in what the government controls.
When the constitution was made it only benefited the rich people and white people. The amendments were made later to help include other races and females. That says a lot about the government. If it weren’t for the 27 amendments I have no idea how life would be now of how much worse life would have been for other races and females. The constitution alone just looks selfish, sexist and racist. I would change that anyway I could.
Part D Question 4-
I think the general and most common attitude and tone of the constitution is to try and be fair and to try and sound as stern as possible. When I read the amendments it sounded to me like the tone was forced. It gave me the impression that the amendments were slipped in last to attempt to be equal and fair. Even though the amendments do help out other races and females, that doesn’t stray, people to forget the inhuman way that people were living before the amendments were established. There were limits put on the government, which I believe is only fair since they have majority of the power. i.e. the separation of powers makes sure that no one part of the government has too much power. I don’t know about the betrayal of public officials. Take the 19th amendment for example. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. But I just can’t believe that people honestly honor this amendment. I’m sure that women have been denied jobs just because they were women since this amendment was ratified.
But I would believe that the government isn’t exactly a beacon of honesty. The history of America speaks for itself, from slavery, to massacres, to segregation, to assassination to wars. When all this is going on it makes it hard to focus attention to a piece of paper with a few laws from over 100 years year ago scribbled down. I believe that sometimes we may look to the constitution sometimes for order and the basis of laws for our county, but I don’t think that we uphold them or even follow them the majority of the time. What good is a piece of paper, when American’s do what they want all the time?
Part D Question 5-
I think that it would be ridiculous to say that we follow all of the rule and law as stated on the constitution. I don’t think that the constitution makes America what it is today. Maybe when the constitution was written, the people back then lived their lives by the book and followed the laws of the constitution. But today I think in a way American’s have made their own laws. I’m not saying that the laws are useless and pointless, because for the most part the laws are important and in some way they do shape how we live, but I don’t think they make a huge difference in our daily lives. Up until 2 weeks ago I knew nothing about the amendments or the constitution and I was living my daily life just fine. I guess that’s why I believe the constitution and amendments aren’t all they are hyped up to be. But I could be wrong; maybe when I get older they may play more of a role in my life. But I’m sure that for countless other American’s the constitution and the amendments shape out important aspect of their lives.

Part C
The importance of amendments 12-15 –
The 12th amendment gave people the right to be able to vote for their presidents and vice presidents. The 13th amendment abolished slavery, the 14th amendment gave equal rights to all citizens of the United States and the 15th amendment made it possible for all citizens of the United States able to vote. I would agree that these amendments were a major turning point in US history. The 13th amendment was huge in many ways, slavery was a large issue for all people of color and before the 13th amendment was ratified there were numerous problems regarding slavery. Then right after the 13th amendment the 14th amendment gave equal rights to all citizens, which made more things available for people who were recently restricted form doing things. Lastly the 15th amendment was also a large step in US history; it gave everyone the right to be able to vote without discrimination of race or previous jobs. These are important amendments because they mark a great change in US history after years of slavery and discrimination there was finally a large change that made a huge effect on people of color. Although the amendment seemed all well and good there were some restrictions to the new amendments. For example the 13th amendment did abolish slavery and the act of forcing people to work but if you committed a crime you were most likely going to be forced to do some type of involuntary work while in confinement. Also while the law did abolish slavery there were several states at the time that still had legal slavery.
Why I think the amendments were passed when they were-
Honestly all I can think of is that the people at the time wanted a change. The Civil War was also a big deal and I could only imagine that it only helped to further move along the many changes in law that were happening at the time. I would like to think that people began to see that people of color were no different than other people and that there was no reason to prolong the suffering of slaves. I noticed that there were some big gaps in when the laws were ratified. The 12th amendment was ratified in 1804. The 13th amendment wasn’t ratified until 1865. This makes me think that everyone was fine with slavery until a war erupted and it took that event to move things along in history. Then another 3 years for equal rights then 2 years for equal voting rights. Wow. Change was happening but very slowly, even after a war.
The amendment that I think was important (16-27)
I like the 26th amendment. I think it’s important because it gives you more responsibly and power as a citizen. We don’t vote very often for our representatives and being able to vote once you’re 18 sounds pretty good. As citizens we don’t get any power in the government and voting for who leads us every 4 years is all we get, so why not take advantage of that? I honestly think that a lot of people don’t vote anyway, but 18 is a ripe age when people start to realize their responsibilities and they take action in exercising their rights. Even if it is only once in a blue moon.

Analysis to Thanksgiving & Black Friday
I didn’t ask my family in the middle of dinner “What happened to the Indians?” I didn’t observe the AWOL while stuffing my face or going shopping with my family the following morning. I realize that America never really looks at the history of things, we just find reasons to celebrate and get together to eat and drink and have fun. Yes it sounds selfish but that’s just the way it is. No one is celebrating the death of the Indians on this day; we are getting close to friends and family and spending quality time with one another. I don’t really see a reason for not celebrating a special time to be with family to enjoy one another. To not celebrate Thanksgiving would be completely idiotic. And to express reasons for not celebrating Thanksgiving a day before the holiday to a bunch of teens whose stomachs are growling and excited to be with family and on break is just cruel and usual punishment. Those people can sulk at home alone all they want, but they have no right to ruin it for the rest of us. As for black Friday, it’s amazing to get up early and buy what you want and what you need for cheap prices. What’s the harm in that?! Christmas is coming up, and prices are going up so… black Friday is perfect for gifts for friends, family and not to mention teachers who have a completely pessimistic outlook on America and its values. Happy Holidays :-)
Part B
Full Faith & Credit-
I interpreted this part of the constitution to mean that each state of the United States of America can establish their own laws. Also that it is okay for other states to differ from of agree with the laws of another state. For gay marriage this basically means that a gay couple can go somewhere else and get married within the United States, if they can’t get married where they are at the time. Unless by some unanimous miraculous decision all of the states have the same laws on gay marriage then…they are SOL if the odds aren’t in their favor.
Supreme Law of the Land & No Religious Test-
The supreme law of the land is the constitution. In my opinion the no religious test can be good and bad. I believe that religion shouldn’t matter if the person has good values and wants the best for the USA. If religion was a big factor in electing president that may slant the way people see him. If the president was an atheist, and there were people in office that for their own personal reasons had something against atheist things could go wrong. By not including religion I think we avoid a huge trap. I think it is very significant to not include religion as a lens to view people in office.
Lethal Injection & Electric Chair. 8th Amendment-
Well lethal injection and the electric chair do sound like cruel and unusual punishments, but then again in America who follows the rules. Yes, the bill of rights is something that the government is supposed to follow but who knows. In the eyes of the government, it seems to look like nothing they do is wrong and bending something as powerful as the Bill of Rights is “ok” the government will do what they want, but come on guys can you at least try to hold the unlawful acts till we get to the double digit amendments? I think it has to do with the extent of crime done by the wrong do-er In my opinion this amendment can be one looked at in different ways, it’s possible that the government meant to say: “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. UNLESS WE SAY SO”. Oh well.
The 4th Amendment contradicted by MTA and others-
This is a tough one, because I have no idea when the last time the Bill of Rights was updated. Back in the 1700’s I doubt they had as many thefts as we have now or even ½ as much of the crime we have now. It also depends on the particular person’s definition of “unlawful search”. It’s plain and simple, if you look suspicious then you get searched and depending on the cop or superior searching your possessions it could just be because of your skin color. It seems as though everything that is done today goes against some law or some amendment and unlawful searching just adds to the list of people not following the laws.

Part A
Paraphrase the Preamble- Basically it sounds like a sworn oath saying that the people of America in order to keep balance, a perfect country, justice for all citizens, and peace in all homes certify the constitution.
The Legislative Powers and Responsibilities-
• The power to collect taxes
• Borrow $ on the “tab” of USA
• Keep balance between foreign countries and regulate $
• Propose and make laws pertaining to bankruptcy and naturalization
• Regulate the value of domestic $ and foreign $ and regulate the standard weights and measures
• Make punishments for use of counterfeit $
• To establish a way for mail to be brought and sent
• To support the study of science and other useful arts by promising for a certain amount of time, the rights and findings for the inventors and authors
• To make laws that aren’t as powerful as laws made by the supreme court
• To classify and penalize wrong doings in the high seas and offences against the law of nations
• To declare war and to issue letters of marque and reprisal also to make laws pertaining to captures during war
• To build and support armies
• To provide and maintain a navy
• To make rules for the government and regulate the land and navy
• To provide for organizing the army with weapons
The Executive Powers and Responsibilities-
• Agree and pass bills from congress
The Judicial Powers and Responsibilities-
• Power over inferior courts
• Jurisdiction over all cases held
Feelings about taking notes and reading –
I’m not gonna lie the constitution is boring literature, and written in ways that are quite difficult for the average American to read. The laws and articles once comprehended sound pretty basic and self explanatory. My note taking process wasn’t really a long process, I kind of just read it off the computer and looked up words I didn’t know and tried the best I could to paraphrase.
Questions
• How often is the constitution updated or changed, if it is changed or updated at all?
• How can “we the people” be sure that our leaders in office even follow the laws of the constitution?
• Does “we the people” even include us the people?
• Are foreign dealers aware of the laws on the constitution?
• Are the laws ever bent?

Reaction to Election!!
To be honest, i am happy that we have a BLACK President. No matter how many people (Andy) try to give as many reasons as they can to make sure that they try and persuade as many others as they can that Barack Obama is by all means not black. Well those people obviously need a reality check. There are countless Americans that are extreamly happy that we finally have a change.
US Democrats need someone to look out for us, and not another republican to come in to the white house and mess up America more than it is right now. I am one of the people that apprciate a large percentage of Americans that want to make a change. Finally a BLACK President. And to be completly honest, race matters yes, but so does change

oh great America: Capitalism
Jacara Gillard
10/27/08
History
The Bullshit of Capitalism & other “cool” stuff
It is most commonly said that in America we are free. What many of us fail to realize is that we live in a very structured “planned out lifestyle” Which doesn’t exactly prove how “free” we are. One important aspect of this very free nation is the invisible hand. The “invisible hand” is some type of force that pushes us in to doing things that we don’t actually notice. Take schooling for example, most people have been in school since they were 5 and probably won’t be getting out until they are in their 20’s. When we leave college we almost immediately jump straight in to the job market. It isn’t really a choice that we make on our own. life after school is basically planned out and if you don’t follow the status quo of the job market, say “bye bye” to a good life. This ladies and gentlemen is an ongoing example of the great, the powerful and the mighty force we now know as the invisible hand. Moving on, something we are all involved with. A very important aspect of Capitalism is the great nature of buying crap then selling crap. Here in the land of the greedy and the home of the money, we all to well believe in the right to buy sell. Honestly that’s a rich mans game. The rich, as we know it, tend to be on the top. They make the products, sell the products, invest and in turn make all the profit. But I do wonder if they realize that they take the credit from hard working people and that if these hard working and probably poor people chose to stop working, the lovely profit they adore so much may very well begin to crumble. But that won’t happen cause the poor people need money and the rich need money, so this very, very fair way of living most likely wont change. (Sound’s nice doesn’t it?) Now don’t get me wrong, even though this sounds like a really crappy way of the AWOL, its actually how most American’s get by. Yes, I like ipods and yes I’m willing to pay the 150$ for a few scraps of metal and some plastic. But if people didn’t buy products then no one would make products then the people who work in the factories putting these gadgets and gismos together wont have a job and the AWOL as we know it may cease to exist…scary huh? Here in our great county the rich get richer and the poor get poorer by giving their money to the rich, why? They have no choice if they want to survive the lovely aspects of capitalism. Isn’t life so swell?

History
When you think about the American Way of Life many things can come to mind, Often politics, race or jobs. My family when asked spoke about how everyone’s perception of the American Way of Life (AWOL) can be different depending on where they are headed or how they see life in general. The core, of AWOL that both my mother and father agree on is money. All of USA and everyone’s AWOL revolves around money, whether its bills, allowance, and car note payment of college tuition. “It’s what separates Americans” a local dog walker mentioned when asked what an important aspect of American life is. When he spoke about he nodded vigorously when I explained that I agree, he continued to say that even though money can be a burden to our country it is needed more than it is supplied. When I asked middle aged woman walked her bike she disagreed with my opinion that money runs the country. She argued that the next generations of children run the country. She explained how the youth of America needs to step up and take action, and that USA needs to look out for its children not its “dough”. This shows that its not a specific AWOL that American’s live but one that differs completely depending on who you are.

T-t-t-t-hat's all folks!
Check it out for yourself!!!
My life from JacG on Vimeo.
1.In this video I included myself, my family, my friends and other things I do when I am idle. I have my friends in places we can usually be found ie. school, barnes and noble and the train station. I have my family in pictures doing things we usally do like hanging out, going on vaction and going to resturants. Lastly i show what I do on my free time.
2. The first part relates to my life because it's about high school and the things that happen there, like Teacher Talent Shows and my friends zoned out while attemption to do work at school. The second part of my video shows my family. They relate to me in many ways. I've known them all my life and they will always have my back in whatever I do in life. The third part relates to my life because my friends are a big part of my life and they are involved in most of the things that I do and hopefully they will be involved in the many things im going to do.
3. My friends and family are good things in my life. Both influnce me in positive ways and will never steer me in the wrong direction. I can always count on any of them for anything I need. My idle time could be a bad aspect of my life. I spend most of my idle time online or in front of TV, when it could probably be spent doing better more bebficial things. i honestly don't see any neutral points everything is "black and white" to me.
4. I would have like to include my morning commute. I think that's a pretty important part of my life since i have to get to and from school daily. But I wasn't able to include that part of my life.
5. I think my life is headed in a pretty great direction. The enviorment I am in is pretty good, I'm surrounded by people who care about me and a school that has been preparing me for the larger steps in life for 3 years. I think so far my life is going pretty well. My general pattern is a person trying to progress the best I can with what i've got.
6. My friend time fits well with my family time and my idle time is something I make time for because it's something i enjoy doing. These aspects of my life never really clash, but when they do clash, its a minor glitch and it is quickly resolved. Overall my life runs pretty smoothly.
7.My life can be typical in some ways and then not typical in others. Typically I love to hang out with my friends and I like to watch TV and be lazy. But I'm independant and don't have trouble with "living above the influence" while some teens do. I like different types of movies and music than the majority of my family whereas some may just blend with their family.
8. All the aspects of my life are really important and i think of them all. I ask myself "who's going to be around me in 5 years?" or "what path will my life take?"
