Brain Washing for Stu.. er I Mean Dirty Brains

Wow I thought that was a smooth move in Friday's class. Andy actually addressed the fact that he 'might' be brain washing us. Then he turned around and said that perhaps he wasn't. Don't you hate it when that happens, when someone says one thing then they turn around and say something that in a way contradicts what they just said. We all fell for that shit too. Come on seriously, any thoughts that we are having about AWOL or AWOB or AWOP are all because of Andy. Before September I highly doubt that we gave two shits about the Danish or taxes or the Constitution or Midwives. So yes, we have been brain washed... no wait. I wonder if he's proud that the sort of mindless bunch from September has magically transformed in to people who sort of care about the shitty components of America.

We should be happy that we have a completely narcissistic teacher.

Jacara -

Another thought provoking critique/appreciation.

When I (and probably this goes for most of the other people born in the U.S. around 1975 which is a surprisingly high percentage of your teachers) hear the phrase "smooth move" I always think of laxatives. Which might be a useful connection.

You and I should talk a little more about what I'm trying to do. One film that sort of gets at it is "higher learning" - not the skinhead part but especially the words typed across at the end.

I wouldn't say I am trying to "brainwash" you in the usual sense of that confusing word. I would say that I am trying to problematize - to direct your attention to specific and general contradictions (between rhetoric and reality, between what we want and what we get, between vague parts of your world-understanding and specific parts of your world-understanding). I have my own, shaky, thoughts in response to those contradictions. I don't lose any sleep if you and other students don't share my take. I do lose a little sleep at the image of clueless (and your word is apt) narcissistic individuals avoiding awareness of these contradictions while singing along to "I Love College" while;
the U.S. tortures people - the next generation of nuclear bombs gets built - more indigenous cultures suffer genocide - more whales get killed by Japanese "science" or US "security" - more people lose the chance at an aware and thoughtful experience of their brief lives.

Have to sleep now - can't edit - hope this is ok.
